Anniston Runners Club Connection - January 6, 2012

Anniston Runners Club Connection

Hello, ARC runners,

Lots going on in the club this week, so there's no reason to wow anyone with prose this morning. Here's the good stuff:

We've added a new feature to the ARC Facebook page. It's a weekly poll, so click over to that page and record your answer. We'll include the results in next week's newsletter. This week's question: What brand of running shoes do you normally wear?

And here's an important bit of housekeeping: The e-mail account for this newsletter is ARCnewsconnection@gmail.com. Please use that to send in your race reports, comments, suggestions and complaints. (Complaints we forward to Ed Turner; that's not our gig here.) Also, you might want to set up your e-mail spam filter to make sure your newsletters don't get trashed before you see them.

Fast and injury-free running for everyone this weekend.

Sincerely,

Phillip

Anniston Runner's Club E-NewsYour nose is red

Who's running in the Red Nose Run this weekend in Birmingham? Hopefully, a lot of ARC runners will participate. Weather should be great for a January run. If you go, make sure you send in your race reports so we can know how you did. There is a 10-mile and a 5K, so there's something for everyone. Wouldn't it be great if one of our runners won that 10-miler? (Hint, hint ...)

Superb highlights

Via Facebook, Jim Parham reports that the ARC 1200 and MAD information has been updated. Jim writes, "ARC 1200 & MAD data current as of Jan 5. Most prompt reporting yet. Thank you. Highlights are superb. Encourage all to peruse. Ranking on All Runner Sort reflects zero if not reported.Just need a few more MAD and 1200 to report. See the data. One Runner removed from list--no record kept in December. If you know these folk, give 'em a call so we can wrap up."

Go to www.arcrunners.com for details.

Drinks are on me

Hopefully, no one needs reminding, but the ARC banquet is next week (Jan. 14) at Anniston Country Club. Rumor is that Brooke N. is going to lead a quick 5-mile trail run through the golf course afterward.

Mount Cheaha 50K Update
Todd Henderson encourages anyone thinking of running ARC's only 50K to go ahead and sign up! To date, there are 145 signed up and spots for only 70 more. There are a record number of ARC members doing the ultra this year, so come run the trails with your friends! If you don't plan to run it, plan to volunteer. It's a blast and ARC members are needed as volunteers in many capacities: registration the night before, aid station volunteers, finish line volunteers, etc....

Attention, trail junkies

Anniston Runner's Club E-NewsBrooke Nelson sent this in and needs a quick response from ARC's trail runners.

You asked for uber-cool trail running shirts in a color that will keep you from getting shot, and we can have them before Mount Cheaha 50K if you act quickly.  I need a commitment and a size from each of you before I can place the order. Thanks to the awesome people at Fleet Feet in Huntsville, we can get a great deal on NORTH FACE 2012 Velocitee running shirts in orange - both men's/women's-specific sizes. The cost will be between $20-$25, which is even cooler! The Trail Junkies' logo will be on the front, not real large.

Size options: Women: XS, SM, M, LG, XL

Men: SM, M, LG, XL, 2XL

Shoot me a Facebook message or an email ASAP:  brookenelson@amcvets.com

I need to know the sizes you want. - Brooke N.

Membership counts

Don't forget that January is the time to renew your ARC membership. It's easy, and it's cheap. Don't forget to re-up as soon as possible - perhaps at Half-Naked Marathon at McClellan, or at the ARC banquet?

Running headlines  - Are any ARC members planning to run Boston this year?If so, you're going to be in the same field with last year's men's and women's champions. Geoffrey Mutai and Caroline Kilel are returning to defend their titles in the April 16 race. Click here for the story: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/last-years-boston-marathon-champs-commit-to-defending-their-crowns-in-2012/2012/01/05/gIQAupuncP_story.html

By the way, Mutai's time was 2 hours, 3 minutes, 2 seconds. Think about it.

- Good news from New York: The NYC Marathon will be shown on live television for the first time in decades. That's great news for running junkies. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/06/sports/new-york-city-marathon-to-be-shown-live-nationally.html

- Check this out: 67-year-old runner sets the record for the most certified marathons run in a single year. Hint: he basically ran a marathon every three days in 2011. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/03/most-marathons-run-in-a-year_n_1182303.html

Mark your calendars

Anniston Runner's Club E-NewsTrying to plan the first half of your 2012 race schedule? Here's a good Alabama race calendar that should help. Follow the links and you can find other states, too.

Running words

"There's nothing like traveling and doing a race. It may not make for speedy times or easy recoveries, but it does something else. It brings passion to my journeys. And there's no better souvenir than one you have earned by running 26.2 miles." -- Rachel Toor, Race Travel, Running Times, March 2011
