Anniston Runners Club Connection - January 10, 2012

Anniston Runners Club Connection

Hello, ARC runners,

This year's ARC banquet is less than 48 hours away, so have a good run, then clean up and head over to the Anniston Country Club. The shindig starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

For the curious, banquet night is when we announce the Grand Prix schedule for 2012, bring in our new slate of club officers and recognize our 1,200-mile club, mile-a-day club and other dignitaries. Don't miss the ARC social event of the year. (Plus, college football season's over; what else are you going to do this weekend?)

See you Saturday. Run fast and injury-free.

Anniston Runner's Club E-NewsWeekend weather

Running this weekend? Hope so, cause the weather's gonna be fine. Saturday, a high of 52; Sunday, a high of 57. Both days should by cool in the morning and mostly sunny all day. Go run. That's an order.

And the winner is ...

This week, the ARC Facebook poll question was, "What brand of running shoe do you normally wear?" There were 50 votes cast. The results:

Asics - 17

Saucony - 10

Brooks - 9

Nike - 5

New Balance - 5

Other - 4

Check the ARC Facebook page soon for next week's question.

Anniston Runner's Club E-NewsWhat, no chocolate?

Organizers at the Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham have announced that GU flavors this year for that race are vanilla bean and strawberry banana. There are three GU locations on course.

Race reports

FROM BRIAN MOUNT: I did the Mississippi Blues Half-Marathon on Jan. 7 and the Banktrust First Light Marathon in Mobile on Jan 8. The Mississippi Blues Half is a great organized race with run through downtown Jackson with a hilly course. Great crowd support, great medal, great after party with concert and all food you want to eat after the race. The host hotel Marriott is great to runners with late checkout and great breakfast early in morning before the race. The city gets behind this event all the way and gives runners big welcome to the city. Great overall experience and recommend race.
The Banktrust First Light Marathon in Mobile is run through the streets of downtown Mobile and is mostly flat with few hills. The expo is next door to motel and everything is within walking distance of the motel. There is a great pasta dinner night before the race and medal is handmade by disability people from the L'Arche. The finish is in downtown next to a park where there is a great concert and after-party with all types of food. The Mobile race is a low-key event with no chip time and no pacers. It is a good race with the money going to help the L'Arche disabily center. I recommend both these races to anybody looking for two great races to do in January. My time for the Mississippi Blues Half Marathon was 2:13:22 and time for FirstLight Marathon was 4:36:23. I did not know if I could finish two races back to back and I consider this a great running accomplishment for me.

FROM RICH ETTER: I ran in the Red Nose Run 5K and finished 2nd in the 50 to 54
age group in a time of 22:31.

Run (half) naked

Anniston Runner's Club E-News

Don't forget that the McClellan Medical Park Half-Naked Marathon is Saturday, Jan. 21. Plagiarizing from the ARC Website, which says, "This 13.1 mile run at McClellan is a great training run for the upcoming Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham in February. Called "naked" because there are no trophies awarded, the event is wildly popular with the members of the Anniston Runners Club. Discounted breakfast after the race."

In other words, don't miss it!

Membership counts

Don't forget that January is the time to renew your ARC membership. It's easy, and it's cheap. Don't forget to re-up as soon as possible - perhaps at Half-Naked Marathon at McClellan, or at the ARC banquet?

Members pay $15.00 for an individual membership, or $20 for a family membership. Memberships are on a calendar year basis. All memberships should be renewed by January 31, 2012.

Running words

"There's nothing like traveling and doing a race. It may not make for speedy times or easy recoveries, but it does something else. It brings passion to my journeys. And there's no better souvenir than one you have earned by running 26.2 miles." - Rachel Toor, Race Travel, Running Times, March 2011
