Anniston Runners Club Connection - January 10, 2012

Anniston Runners Club Connection

Hello, runners,

First, an apology: Today's ARC News Connection is long, -- not Tolstoy's "War and Peace" long, but long nonetheless. Recapping everything that happened at Saturday's ARC banquet takes a lot of words, so let's dive right in.

Oh, and don't forget - this Saturday is the much-anticipated Half-Naked Marathon at McClellan. If you haven't signed up, what are you waiting for?

And, a reminder to send in your race reports, training reports, gripes, complaints, suggestions or anything else to our e-news. The address is ARCnewsconnection@gmail.com.

Plus, if you're not getting this twice a week in your inbox, give me a shout and we'll work on it.

Fast and injury-free running,

Phillip

Dec. 1 - Chief Ladiga Trail half-marathon

Dec. 8 - Dashing Through The Springs 5K

For those who like to plan way in advance, this means there is at least one Grand Prix race every month except January, July and November. Of course, that doesn't take into account popular non-GP races such as the Mercedes Weekend in Birmingham, the Rocket City in Huntsville and (clap-clap) the NYC Marathon, or our local races such as the Half-Naked half-marathon in January or the Plucked Turkey 10K on Thanksgiving morning.

Remember, too, that the GP rules have changed, as well. Much more on that later.

And the winner is ...
This week's poll question has been added to the ARC Facebook page. "What is the most important factor for considering a race one of your favorites?" Go vote. Results will be announced later this week.

Highlights of ARC Banquet 2012

Ed Turner's speech about his good friend Dennis Dunn, which will go down in history as comparable to Lincoln's speech at Gettysburg, FDR's speech to Congress after Pearl Harbor, and Belushi's unforgettable speech in "Animal House." Good job, Ed.

Jim Parham's announcement that the club had run enough miles in 2011 to circle the globe 3 times. Wow.

The induction of the new slate of officers, with Prez Steven Miles' discussion of Joe Jankowski's idea of working outreach running programs in west Anniston.(Did I remember that correctly, Steven? Hope so ...)

David Long's rendition of "Happy Birthday" in honor of his wife, Haley. The man's got guts, doesn't he?

More from the banquet

Jim Parham's information on the 1,200-mile club and the MAD was so good as a 2011 recap, I've decided to reprint it here. Enjoy:

"Final month of the 1,200 and MAD (Mile A Day) divisions are now in the books. 2011 was a banner year for our runners. Take a look at the highlights for the year. Truly remarkable stories that underscore the data. The data will tell you that we ran enough miles to circle the globe three times this year, that we exceeded 2010 mileage by over 25 percent, that we have one runner who averaged almost 300 miles a month, and three others who averaged over 200 a month. Mile a Day runners who doubled their 2010 totals. The highlights tell you the stories behind the data. Runners who reported from races all over the world. Our runners were in all the big events in our states: the Boston, New York, Marine Corps and Disney marathons to name a few. Our runners reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, Europe and Antarctica.

"The highlights will tell you of PR's, record setting, camaraderie, family, tenacity and determination. Runners who overcame many obstacles.Runners who ran for health, competition or just the sheer joy of running. A perusal is worth your time.

"We had forty-three runners who earned the 1,200-Mile technical T. Twenty-six runners earned MAD status, by running 365 miles to meet the mile a day standard. December was not a remarkable month for setting records as it was an average month.  But what an average! Take a look at the graphs for the 1,200 and MAD and you will see what I mean. Still, our 74 runners averaged more than90 miles each for the month. Milers ran enough to surpass ALL the months for 2010; MAD runners ran 1,499 miles far surpassing the 2010 average of 1,281 miles.

"Our top runners for the year were Ken Brewer, Chris Mahaffey, Gordon Harvey and Jay Lloyd. These are the runners who averaged more than 200 miles a month. Ken came close to 300 a month. Along with Valerie Burrage, these same runners led all runners in December. The rank of all runners sorted display these and all individual accomplishments.

"MAD runners achieved levels of success that may not be obvious from the data. Jay Worrall almost tripled his mileage from 2010. Phillip Tutor overcame injury, running zero in January and February, and improved more than 2010 by 75 percent -- our most improved MAD runner. Other runners came tantalizingly close to achieving 1,200 miles. Our top MAD runners were Kim Powers, Linda Barger, Dennis Dunn and April Meyer. All averaged more than 75 miles a month.  Good luck to these and all our runners for 2012.

"PS: Special kudos for Alice Thrower, who ran 1,246 miles in 2011. I skipped over Alice at the banquet. My apologies! She did get her T-shirt, though!

"Reminder from the e-mail requesting your sizes: If you can't make the banquet, please make arrangements for pick up by someone or we'll hold for a later date. Alternatively, you can pick up your socks or T from Dennis Dunn at the Anniston Star. Dennis has them!"

The ARC store

Those who asked for a wider range of ARC-themed apparel should be happy: ARC is now taking orders for hoodies, long-sleeved tech shirts and duffel bags with our logos on them. Banquet-goers had a chance to place their orders Saturday night.

If you haven't ordered, please do. Cost is $30 for the hoodies, $25 for the long-sleeved tech shirts and $40 for the duffels, which can have either the ARC logo or the ARC Tri-team logo.

Mr. Spann says ...

Long-range weather forecast for Saturday's Half-Naked Marathon at McClellan is 68/50 with a chance for showers. In other words, good weather for running half-naked in public.

Did you see ...
Janet Cherobon-Bawcom of Atlanta, one of our best-ever Woodstock 5K winners, finished fifth at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston last Saturday with a time of 2:29:45.

Running words

"My thoughts before a big race are usually pretty simple. I tell myself: "Get out of the blocks, run your race, stay relaxed. If you run your race, you'll win. Channel your energy. Focus."- Carl Lewis
