Anniston Runners today is Friday and ENews can see the finish line in the distance as Woodstock 5K is only two weeks away – can you believe it?
So as the finish line approaches for Woodstock , I thought it would be a good time to talk about finish lines and results. Results are important to runners- it is why we pay money and run races. Yes- I know the races have a charitable cause and I like to support the cause.
After having the opportunity to work several races this spring, I saw several things that affect the proper recording of results. Race directors and runners- please take note. You may think your results are not important to you, but they affect EVERY runner who finishes behind you. If you do not record proper information, age groups winners could be wrong, grand prix points could be incorrect and times could be incorrect.
So take note Anniston Runners let’s be good finishers!

Finishing Etiquette
If your race is using a tab on the runner’s number, completely fill in the tab including first and last name without tearing the tab before you pin it to your clothing.
As you approach the finish line, make sure your number is visible on the front of your shirt or shorts. If your number is not visible you may not be scored and timed properly at the finish. This also helps you find those great pictures that were taken of you as you run the race. Try to put on a burst of speed and give the spectators a wave of acknowledgment. They will appreciate it.
As you approach the finish line make a mental note of the time on the clock and listen for your time to be called. Remember – unless your race is chip-timed, you are responsible to know your finish time. Remember your time! Pass through the finishing chute that you are directed to and keep moving. Finish chutes need to be at least 30 feet long to allow space to slow down and avoid back-ups. Do not pass in the chute and do not stop in the chute. There may be a lot of runners finishing at the same time and if the chute becomes blocked a real log-jam can occur. Many races are timed by using a tab that is torn off at the finish or a finisher card. Start tearing your tag off as soon as you pass over the finish line and hand it to the volunteer at the end of the chute. If the race is using a card, do not leave the chute until you get your card. If the race is being timed with the computer chips, just pass through without stopping. There will be a receptacle for you to return your chip.
For races with finisher cards:
When leaving the chute, DO NOT leave the finish area before completing your finish card- no cool downs or stretches. The finishers table should be near the end of the chute and stocked with ink pens not lead pencils. Complete the card with first and last names. Take a minute to gather yourself so you print clearly and complete all boxes. No fake names or made up names- respect other runners by including correct information.

Open Water Tri Training: This Sunday, July 19 at Brooke Nelson’s cabin
Thinking of doing a tri this season? Or just want to get in a little extra swim time in open water? Come on out to my cabin on Sunday, July 19 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. I’ll be glad to lifeguard while you swim.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Buoys are required! What’s a buoy? I have swim buoys that we use for safety reasons. Obviously if we have a bunch of swimmers at all different levels, there is no way to safely monitor them all, so you are required to wear a buoy that ties at your waist and drags along behind you. Looks like it’s following you! Creates a little drag, but give you great comfort if you need to hang onto it to catch your breath or if you have a cramp.
2. Bring your own goggles!
Want to come? Just email me and I’ll send you directions.
Thanks –
Brooke

1200 Mile Club Update.
Despite the increased challenge of a hot and humid
Runners who have other Goals (lots of triathletes, swimmers and bikers here) with no illusions of achieving the 1200 are also doing superbly in meeting their personal goals. Virtually every runner in this category is either meeting goal or has personally told me THEY WILL.
To encourage even more participation, ARC will now be offering the following:
Runners who reach the 1200 Club will receive the following:
Long Sleeve Tech Shirt with 1200 Mile Club on it – they will be honored at the ARC Banquet. One Runner has already reached that lofty goal. Look at Ken Brewer's mileage!
All other Runners listed will receive a pair of ARC socks and recognized for participating. More runners welcome. Only requirement is to RUN and Report your mileage. Still not too late if you have a good log or accurate estimates. Talk to your fellow Runners. Report to CDRJIMPARHAM@HOTMAIL.COM.
For individual Honors, Ken Brewer continues to lead us all and has already hit 1200 as mentioned. Will Williams and Rick Hester round out the top 3 and will hit 1000 this month for sure.
In terms of meeting personal Goals, Elite 1200 mile Runner Roxanna Conroy is only 1 mile off pace. Beth Howard is 2 off and tells me she will be picking up the pace even while competing nationally as a swimmer. And finally, our President Dennis Dunn is 2 ahead of goal.
Sooooooo.......talk it up. Get more runners to play and Run Like a Kid, Report Like a Pro!
