Anniston Runners ENews 2009- July 17

Anniston Runners today is Friday and ENews can see the finish line in the distance as Woodstock 5K is only two weeks away – can you believe it?

So as the finish line approaches for Woodstock, I thought it would be a good time to talk about finish lines and results. Results are important to runners- it is why we pay money and run races. Yes- I know the races have a charitable cause and I like to support the cause.

After having the opportunity to work several races this spring, I saw several things that affect the proper recording of results. Race directors and runners- please take note. You may think your results are not important to you, but they affect EVERY runner who finishes behind you. If you do not record proper information, age groups winners could be wrong, grand prix points could be incorrect and times could be incorrect.

So take note Anniston Runners let’s be good finishers!

   Finishing Etiquette

If your race is using a tab on the runner’s number, completely fill in the tab including first and last name without tearing the tab before you pin it to your clothing.

As you approach the finish line, make sure your number is visible on the front of your shirt or shorts. If your number is not visible you may not be scored and timed properly at the finish. This also helps you find those great pictures that were taken of you as you run the race. Try to put on a burst of speed and give the spectators a wave of acknowledgment. They will appreciate it.

As you approach the finish line make a mental note of the time on the clock and listen for your time to be called. Remember – unless your race is chip-timed, you are responsible to know your finish time. Remember your time! Pass through the finishing chute that you are directed to and keep moving. Finish chutes need to be at least 30 feet long to allow space to slow down and avoid back-ups. Do not pass in the chute and do not stop in the chute. There may be a lot of runners finishing at the same time and if the chute becomes blocked a real log-jam can occur. Many races are timed by using a tab that is torn off at the finish or a finisher card. Start tearing your tag off as soon as you pass over the finish line and hand it to the volunteer at the end of the chute. If the race is using a card, do not leave the chute until you get your card. If the race is being timed with the computer chips, just pass through without stopping. There will be a receptacle for you to return your chip.

For races with finisher cards:

When leaving the chute, DO NOT leave the finish area before completing your finish card- no cool downs or stretches. The finishers table should be near the end of the chute and stocked with ink pens not lead pencils. Complete the card with first and last names. Take a minute to gather yourself so you print clearly and complete all boxes. No fake names or made up names- respect other runners by including correct information.

Open Water Tri Training:  This Sunday, July 19 at Brooke Nelson’s cabin

Thinking of doing a tri this season? Or just want to get in a little extra swim time in open water? Come on out to my cabin on Sunday, July 19 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. I’ll be glad to lifeguard while you swim.

REQUIREMENTS:

1.    Buoys are required! What’s a buoy? I have swim buoys that we use for safety reasons. Obviously if we have a bunch of swimmers at all different levels, there is no way to safely monitor them all, so you are required to wear a buoy that ties at your waist and drags along behind you. Looks like it’s following you! Creates a little drag, but give you great comfort if you need to hang onto it to catch your breath or if you have a cramp.

2.    Bring your own goggles!

Want to come? Just email me and I’ll send you directions.

Thanks –

Brooke

1200 Mile Club Update.

Despite the increased challenge of a hot and humid Alabama June, ARC matched the May total and continues to be very close to 1200 miles as a team. In recognition of Runners who have achieved the 1200 mile pace,  these runners have been highlighted on the spread sheet. A number of other runners are very close.

Runners  who have other Goals (lots of triathletes, swimmers and bikers here)  with no illusions of achieving the 1200 are also doing superbly in meeting their personal goals. Virtually every runner in this category is either meeting goal or has personally told me THEY WILL.

To encourage even more participation, ARC will now be offering the following:

Runners who reach the 1200  Club will receive the following:

Long Sleeve Tech Shirt with 1200 Mile Club on it – they will be honored at the ARC Banquet. One Runner has already reached that lofty goal. Look at Ken Brewer's mileage!

All other Runners listed will  receive a pair of ARC socks and recognized for participating. More runners welcome. Only requirement is to RUN and Report your mileage. Still not too late if you have a good log or accurate estimates. Talk to your fellow Runners. Report to CDRJIMPARHAM@HOTMAIL.COM.

For individual Honors, Ken Brewer continues to lead us all and has already hit 1200 as mentioned.  Will Williams and Rick Hester round out the top 3 and will hit 1000 this month for sure.

In terms of meeting personal Goals, Elite 1200 mile Runner Roxanna Conroy is only 1 mile off pace. Beth Howard is 2 off and tells me she will be picking up the pace even while competing nationally as a swimmer. And finally, our President Dennis Dunn is 2 ahead of goal.

Sooooooo.......talk it up. Get more runners to play and Run Like a Kid, Report Like a Pro!

Weaver BMX Track

Hello Friends,

Did you know that there is now a BMX track in Weaver www.weaverbmx.com ?

Did you know that they have old people categories even though the racing is meant to gets kids racing bikes?

If you think your kids will race here are a few pointers;

Wear a helmet, long sleeve shirt, gloves and long pants

No bar ends or kickstands.  That means that a mtn bike can be used

My first attempt at this was three weeks ago and I must say that it is a blast to race or watch.  I know it's short notice but I understand that moving forward there will be races on Th nights every week.  The Grand opening is July 30 & 31st and the AL State Championships are already scheduled for September.

Hope to see some of you tomorrow and please tell a friend.

Quick Chicks take flight!

First there were baby chicks, then Colonel Chick, then hot chicks, then Dixie Chicks, then Krystal Chicks now there is the fastest and coolest of them all – the ARC’s Quick Chicks.

The Quick Chicks began a group run on Mondays at the Norwood Hodges Center (Golden Springs) at 6:00 pm each Monday for the rest of the summer. The focus Angelia Todd also is looking for ideas for a get together, ideas for activities or a training run suggestion for the Quick Chicks. The Quick Chicks are focusing on getting more ladies running and they are starting with runs that will focus on the new runners. There will be more 10-15 minute per mile paces and working on the distance.

The Quick Chicks now have an identity- if you did not get one of their awesome hot pink shirts at Haley’s Twilight Run, they will be available at the Quick Chicks run and  at the Tuesday – Thursday training runs for only $18.00 – all sizes are available.

Please contact Angelia for more information about the Quick Chicks at angelia247@aol.com .

Claudis Hawkins turns 92

Our ageless runner Claudis Hawkins celebrated his 93rd birthday (92 years old)on July 6. Brooke Nelson reports Claudis plans to be at Woodstock again this year- he has a free entry for life. I am sure we all look forward to celebrating Claudis’ running accomplishments and seeing him again. Happy birthday Claudis – you are a true inspiration to everyone.

Thank you ARC for Making Haley’s Twilight 5k a Success

Dennis,

Cal Seales, Rich Lamonica and I want to thank you and the Anniston Runner's Club for your awesome support of the Haley's Twilight Run.  With the ARC's help, to date we have raised over $4000 and that amount continues to climb.  We still have over $1000 in pledges to collect and we think that once everything is collected and the bills are paid, we will have raised $5000+ for Cystic Fibrosis research with this one event.  That's HUGE!  We appreciate the great turnout and the help we received from you and the members of the club. We also appreciate everyone's patience as we were overwhelmed with the turnout at the race.  We had planned for around 150-175 participants, but as you know we ended up with around 220 participants for the 5k and about 21 for the 1k.  Needless to say, we were very pleased but quite tired by the end of the night.  We will take the lessons learned from this year's race and apply them to next year's event to make it even better, and we hope that everyone will come out and support us again next year.

Thanks again for making the Haley's Twilight 5k a great success!

Magadia Masters Manila Marathon!

Greetings from  the Philippines!

I finished 33rd Milo Manila Marathon July 5. Not my best time (4:31:22). The course was tough (I stopped counting after 10 looooong hills), the weather was a killer (81 degrees with 80% humidity at the start, went up to 88% with 100 humidity towards the end), there was not much crowd & traffic control (we were dodging taxis & jeepneys along major intersections; lots of pedestrian/casual walkers along the route). On a positive note: I got to run a marathon in my home country in front of my family (finishing in front of them is priceless), entry fee was $4, lots of aid stations. The guy who finished first (2:18:01) is an Army man who is in the Philippine Olympic team.

Joy & the kids did the companion 5K. She said that they were not able to run the whole time as they were "stuck" with walkers most of the time (they must have at least 10,000 5k participants who started at 6am ; we had about 2,000 marathoners who started at 4:30am)

Now, I'm gonna enjoy my vacation without thinking of long runs for a while.

See y'all at Woodstock.

Raul Magadia

Charger Cord for a Garmin Forerunner 205

Runners, my Garmin Forerunner 205 was stolen a couple of weeks ago.  I was lucky to be able to replace it with a 405, but I still have the charger cord for my old 205.  Since they are not compatible, if anyone would like to have my 205 charger cord to have as a spare, you're welcome to it!  Call me (239-6232), email me- Mercy Pilkington (mercypilkington@yahoo.com) if you are able to use it.

Thanks,

Remembering James Beecham

Dennis,

I attended the funeral service at Gray Brown, graveside and fellowship after for James Beecham at Holley Springs this past Friday. Like James and his boys, Brian and Bradley, my family joined the club recently. So, we are just getting to know some of the members. I was saddened to hear of his death and quickly recalled that James was the first person to shake my hand and greet me when I started doing speed work at McClellan. He even beat Brooke Nelson and Randy Lusk to the punch which is no small accomplishment as many may attest to. I was struck at the eulogy for James how Rev. Barksdale chose to relate the race of life that the Apostle Paul preached: that the ultimate goal of Christians is the race to heaven. The preacher spoke of how he had just bumped into James at the grocery store not two weeks earlier and James had enthusiastically told him he and his boys had joined the Anniston Runners Club and they were all enjoying running and being in the club. It was an important social outlet for a man who spent most of his days in the woods working cutting wood. Rev. Barksdale was impressed by James’ natural ability and on display were some of the medals James had won for 2nd and 3rd place. James placed despite having only just joined the club.  I learned afterwards that the preacher witnessed first- hand James running in the forest to get fuel from their work truck when he ran out. He did not walk to get fuel, he ran to get fuel.

The final comments for closing related how James had finally won the most important race and we all will get to fourth turn eventually. So, give it your all despite the side stitches and occasional cramps of life.

I’ve decided on the final turn of the Woodstock Race to truly give it my all. I’ll keep on missing James though.

Wade Griffin

Thank you Wade- we will all miss James! DD

Looking for Pinhoti 100 Training partners:

Hi Dennis,

In your next ENews, can you send out a request for me?

Looking for Pinhoti 100 Training partners:

I’m looking for training partners to do some long distance trail running on the Pinhoti trail in preparation for the Pinhoti 100 this November. I’m looking for runners interested in doing 15~30 mile trail runs or runs that are well over 4 hours in duration. I’ll be out of town this week for a motorcycle race in Kansas but I’ll be back Saturday night (7/11) and I’ll be up for doing a run this Sunday (7/12) morning if anyone is interested. This will be a regular thing once a week either on a Saturday or a Sunday. If anyone is interested, they can call or text my cell phone at 412-401-1477.

Thanks,

Krishna Pribadi

Woodstock - 2010 Status

Anniston Runners Club has been on a wild, wacky, wonderful ride the last four years!
We have seen our membership grow from 49 members to more than 630! We have enjoyed phenomenal growth with our signature race, the Woodstock 5k, from 79 runners entered in 2005 to almost 700 entrants for the 5k and 1 mile last year, and who knows how many will come to run the 2009 RRCA National 5k Championship on August 1. We have reveled in championships. Besides this year’s National designation, we won bids for the following: the 2007 RRCA Alabama State Championship and the 2008 RRCA Southern Region Championship. We have increased opportunities and offerings for our members: more races, more training, more socials, more educational workshops. And we have received record support from sponsors.

Yes, we have gotten used to getting more, giving more, enjoying more. So, it came as a bit of a surprise when I received word that we did not receive the bid to host the 2010 RRCA National Championship. Especially since it had been intimated that unlike the other championships (State or Region), the RRCA liked to keep a National Championship in the same location for more than one year. Because of our extreme success, commitment to the event, dedication to organization, we had been lead to believe it was a done deal for us to host it again. However, we didn’t know that tradition has it that wherever the RRCA National Convention is held – the local race receives the National Championship designation for whatever distance that race is. For instance in 2008, the RRCA National Convention was in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Flying Pig received the National Championship bid. The 2010 National Convention will be in Lakeland, FL and the local 5K race received the National Championship title.

Was I disappointed that we wouldn’t be hosting the 2010 RRCA National 5K Championship?
For a moment. But then I began to think of what this would mean to our race, to our club, and quite honestly, I could think of only good things. Woodstock is going to be fine. While it’s nice to have a championship title, I truly believe our race will continue to grow whether we ever host another RRCA Championship or not due to our commitment to improving it year after year.  We have done such a great job of getting all levels of runners/walkers involved with our race that this community feels a deep ownership of the Woodstock 5k. Hey, it’s been around for 29 years, and I have no doubt it will be around a whole lot longer.

Will we bid for another RRCA Championship?

Already have! The day I found out we didn’t get the 2010 National Championship, I filled out the bid form to host the 2010 Southern Region 5k Championship again. And when it’s time, we’ll fill out the paperwork to host the 2011 National Championship.

Future?

We anticipate record attendance from now on as winning the championship designations has brought more notoriety to our event and has kept us on our toes to make it better and better, and we believe runners will continue to seek out our race for all it offers. We made a commitment to reach out to the community, to entice everyone to get involved both as volunteers and runners at Woodstock. We believe we have developed a relationship that will continue whether Woodstock sports a championship title or not. Our community has claimed this race as their own.

And the wild, wacky, wonderful ride continues!
